Hand of God

During the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, Argentina faced England in the quarterfinals. To the center of the English penalty area jumped goalkeeper Peter Shilton and Maradona. The striker without any fuss put the ball into the goal with his hand, like a seasoned volleyball player. The referee did not see the offense and recognized the goal. 1)

Paul the Octopus

During the World Cup in South Africa, different countries tried their best to predict the results of the matches. In Germany, a ruckus was caused by a nice octopus Paul, who very accurately predicted the results of the German national team's matches. It predicted, among other things, that Germany will beat Argentina, and indeed it happened. Soon afterward the animal died of natural causes. On hearing of the death of the cephalopod, Maradona did not hide schadenfreude: “I am happy your psychic octopus is gone, it's your fault we lost the World Cup”. 2)

Friends with Castro

The famous footballer has never hidden his weakness for revolutionaries in Cuba. He was friends with Fidel Castro for years and had Ernesto “Che” Guevara's likeness tattooed on his right arm. This corresponded with his anti-capitalist stance. He claimed publicly that he “hates everything that comes from the United States.” 3)

The Maradonian Church

He was probably the only soccer player who had his own true followers. In Rosario, Argentina, the Church of Maradona was officially established. According to the followers - “diegorians” - we are now in the 60th year of our era because the footballer was born 60 years ago. The followers have their own chapel, called the Hand of God and they name their children Diego. 4)

Media hate

For almost his entire career, he fought with media personnel. It even happened to him to shoot journalists. Before a press conference during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he ran over a cameraman's foot. Instead of apologizing, he blamed him for the whole incident, saying: “What an asshole you are, how can you put your leg there where it can get run over, man?” 5)
