Hollywood

Hollywood is a district of the city of Los Angeles in the United States and the most important center of American cinematography. The word Hollywood is used as an abbreviation for the American film and television industry regardless of where it is shot.

Hollywood was a small community in 1870 and was renamed in 1903. In 1910, Hollywood was officially incorporated into Los Angeles and the film industry started to develop there soon after.1)

The place was Cahuenga Valley before being called Hollywood.2)

Hollywood's creator

H. The 'Father of Hollywood' is known as J. Whitley. Born in Canada, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States in the 1870s.3)

Filmakers move from New Jersey

Filmmakers started moving to Hollywood because Thomas Edison, who was living in New Jersey, owned filmmaking equipment patents. Filmmakers moved to Hollywood to escape legal problems. 4)

First film from Hollywood

Old Hollywood was the title of the first movie shot in Hollywood. It was filmed in 1910. The film was seventeen minutes long.5)

First film studio

The first Hollywood film studio was Nestor Studio, located in a roadhouse at 6121 Sunset Blvd. in 1911, by New Jersey's Centaur Co.6)

Hollywood sign

A real estate developer put in place the world famous Hollywood sign in 1923. It was initially planned to remain in position to advertise properties for 18 months. It read 'Hollywoodland,' initially. Long after it was intended, the sign stayed in place, and the word 'land' was removed in 1949.7)

Hollywood Freeway chickens

Since the 1970s, Hollywood has had a population of feral chickens living under a highway. Nobody knows how they got there and all attempts have failed to eliminate them. 8)

Neil Armstrong and the Apollo XI

Neil Armstrong and the Apollo XI crew have moons on the Hollywood Walk of Fame instead of stars. 9)

Walk of Fame

The idea for the Hollywood Walk of Fame came first from the voluntary president of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Stuart, in 1953. 10)

Capitol Records Building

The flickering light atop the Capitol Records Tower spells out in Morse code the word “Hollywood,” and has done so since the opening of the building in 1956. 11)
