Steeplechase after death

Frank Hayes, born in 1901, was a U.S. jockey that won steeplechase after his death. He suffered a heart attack halfway through the race, but the horse finished first with Hayes on its back. 1)

First and only win

He was 22 at the time, and this was his first win. He was the first, and the only jockey to have won a race after death. 2)

Sweet Kiss of Death

His horse, “Sweet Kiss”, was nicknamed “Sweet Kiss of Death” for the rest of her life. 3)

Owned by Mrs. A.M. Frayling

The mare “Sweet Kiss” was owned by Mrs. A.M. Frayling. The race was held over a distance of two miles. 4)

Never raced again

“Sweet Kiss” never raced again, but the Jockey Club recognized that Frank had finished first on her back and therefore he was the official winner of the event. 5)
