Arnold Schwarzenegger

Too "rural"

When creating the German version of the Terminator films, Arnold Schwarzenegger offered to dub his own voice. However, directors thought his Austrian accent was too “rural” to match the tough-guy role of the character. Therefore, they hired a German voice actor instead. 1)

Difficult relations with father

His father Gustav preferred his older son Meinhard to Arnold. His favoritism was “strong and blatant,” stemming from an unfounded suspicion that Arnold was not his biological child. 2)

Champion

Schwarzenegger began lifting weights as early as age 15. He won the Mr. Universe title at age 20 and went on to win the Mr. Olympia competition seven times, remaining a major figure in bodybuilding and writing many books and articles about the sport. 3)

Niece of 35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy

Schwarzenegger married Maria Shriver, niece of 35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy and daughter of 1972 Democratic Vice President and former 1986 French Ambassador Sargent Shriver. 4)

Turned down "Die Hard"

They wanted Arnold to play the lead role in “Die Hard” but Schwarzenegger turned it down. 5)

Governor

As a Republican, Schwarzenegger was first elected on October 7, 2003, in a special recall election to replace then-California Governor Gray Davis. Schwarzenegger was sworn in on November 17 to serve out the remainder of Davis' term. He was then re-elected in California's 2006 gubernatorial election. He completed his second term as governor in 2011. 6)
