The death toll at the end of the siege was at least 385 people. Armed Chechen and Ingush Islamic groups took control of a school in Beslan, igniting the crisis. The hostage-takers demanded that Chechnya's independence be recognized, as well as Russia's withdrawal from the region. On the third day, Russian forces stormed the house, killing several people, including children. Several people went missing as well.
