Steam locomotive lost a race to a horse-drawn train

On August 28, 1830, Peter Cooper who built the Tom Thumb engine accepted a challenge from a horse-drawn train. Tom Thumb was undergoing testing when the race took place. The steam engine lost due to the broken belt. 1).
