“Syndrome K” is a disease made up by Italian doctors in World War II to protect Jewish refugees who fled to their hospitals seeking protection. The refugees were quarantined, and when Nazi forces arrived at the hospitals they were told that the refugees had a contagious, deadly and disfiguring disease known as “Syndrome K.” Not wanting to contract the disease, Nazi soldiers refused to even inspect the patients in these rooms. The actions of the Italian doctors are credited with saving several lives. ¹⁾.
