Origins and Development
Resident Evil began as a 3D remake of the 1989 Capcom horror game Sweet Home, which featured permadeath and a mansion setting. 1)
Capcom changed the name to Resident Evil in the West because “Biohazard” was nearly impossible to trademark in the US at the time. 2)
Director Shinji Mikami was chosen for the project because he famously hated being scared, allowing him to better identify what would truly frighten players. 3)
Many of the static backdrops in the original Spencer Mansion were visually inspired by the Overlook Hotel from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. 4)
The series is known for fixed cameras, but the very first prototype of the 1996 game was actually a first-person shooter. 5)
Early concepts included a cyborg named Gelzer and a comic relief character named Dewey, who were later replaced by Barry Burton and Rebecca Chambers. 6)
The legendary director of Night of the Living Dead wrote a script for a Resident Evil movie in the 90s, but Capcom rejected it for being too different from the game. 7)
S.T.A.R.S. member Joseph Frost was named after Joseph Joestar, a lead character from the popular manga JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. 8) Franchise Records and Sales
As of 2025, the series has sold over 180 million units, making it the best-selling horror game franchise in history. 9)
The 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 is currently the best-selling individual title in the entire franchise, with over 16 million units sold. 10)
By 2026, the franchise is estimated to have grossed a staggering $12 billion across games, films, and merchandise. 11)
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was the first full-length AAA game that was playable from beginning to end entirely in Virtual Reality. 12)
The 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 sold over 12 million units in just under two years, becoming one of Capcom's fastest-selling titles. 13)
Resident Evil 2 introduced the “Zapping System,” where actions taken in Scenario A would alter the items and enemies in Scenario B. 14)
In the US version of the original game, pack sizes for ink ribbons were reduced to make the game harder to finish during a weekend rental. 15)
The 2023 RE4 remake introduced a knife parry system that allows players to deflect almost any attack, including chainsaws and projectiles. 16)
According to official strategy guides from the Code: Veronica era, the medicinal blue herbs are canonically described as having a minty flavor. 17)
Resident Evil 2 on the Tiger 99x (1999) was the first game in the series to feature a link-cable multiplayer component for high-score competitions. 18)
Resident Evil 7 used playable VHS tapes to give players clues for puzzles that they would encounter later in the main story. 19) Resident Evil Village (RE8) Trivia
The Duke occasionally quotes the RE4 Merchant’s “What are you buying?” line, confirming the two are old friends. 20)
The three black roses on Lady Dimitrescu’s dress represent her three daughters: Bela, Daniela, and Cassandra. 21)
Consistent with their mother's dress, each of the three daughters has a small flower tattoo on their forehead. 22)
The crest is a Sun and Moon, which is mirrored in Angie the doll’s face and Donna Beneviento’s facial scarring. 23)
A technical oversight in the luthier’s house allows the room to turn “completed” blue even if players miss a specific drawer of Chem Fluid. 24)
Heisenberg refers to Chris Redfield as a “boulder-punching a**hole,” an explicit nod to the famous QTE in Resident Evil 5. 25)
In the Village demo, a bottle of cleaning fluid features a label that quotes the first verse of the song “Creep” by Radiohead. 26)
In Ethan's home, you can find a book written by George Trevor, the architect who built the Spencer Mansion from the first game. 27)
In the game's storybook intro, the “Bat Lord” is white to symbolize Lady Dimitrescu, while three smaller bats represent her daughters. 28) Character Secrets
Early concept notes for the 1996 game described Jill Valentine as being of half-French and half-Japanese descent. 29)
Initial designs for Leon S. Kennedy included a pet Basset Hound that would have accompanied him through Raccoon City. 30)
In the mobile version of Resident Evil 2, a desk in the police station contains a literal paper recipe for a “Jill Sandwich.” 31)
The 1996 live-action intro was censored in the US to remove a shot of Chris lighting a cigarette, though the 2021 game Village references this by showing him smoking. 32)
The singer of the band “Rebecca,” Nobuko Yamada, starred in the Sweet Home movie, which likely influenced the name of S.T.A.R.S. member Rebecca Chambers. 33)
The original voice of Ashley Graham, Carolyn Lawrence, is also the long-time voice of Sandy Cheeks in SpongeBob SquarePants. 34) Behind the Scenes
The RE Engine was built specifically for Resident Evil 7 to achieve high-fidelity photorealism and efficient VR performance. 35)
For the RE4 remake, the development team was split into three distinct groups focusing separately on the Village, Castle, and Island. 36)
The HD remaster of RE0 removed signs above train doors because they all said “Dining Car” regardless of which room they were in. 37)
Capcom turned down a script by George Romero because they felt it strayed too far from the source material and lacked the series' core horror tone. 38)
A prototype for a Game Boy Color version of the original game exists, though it was cancelled and replaced by Resident Evil Gaiden. 39)
Beyond the trademark issue, Capcom was also worried that a band called “Biohazard” would sue them if they kept the name in the US. 40)
By the time the first Resident Evil was finished, the staff had grown to 80 people, an unprecedented size for a development team in 1996. 41)
The original voice actor for Albert Wesker was instructed to base his performance on the character Shere Khan from The Jungle Book. 42)
The “DS” in the title Deadly Silence was a pun intended to reference the Nintendo DS hardware. 43)
Moreau’s Family Crest features a mermaid, which was designed to contrast his own fishy, grotesque form. 44)
Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026, Resident Evil remains the most profitable and influential survival-horror series in gaming history. 45)
