Raymond Clarence "Ray" Ewry contracted polio as a child and was in a wheelchair for a time. He did not learn to walk until he was 20 years old and began practicing jumping from a place. His long jump record (3.47 m) is still unbeaten today, as this competition was abandoned in the 1930s. At three Olympic Games (1900-1908) he won as many as 8 gold medals in the long jump, high jump, and triple jump.
