New York City

Peter Minuit

In 1626, Peter Minuit bought the island of Manhattan from the Delaware Indian tribe for goods worth 60 Dutch guilders (the equivalent of $1,000 in 2006 dollars). One of the debunked legends says that the Delawares resold the island for glass beads, which were estimated to be worth $24. 1)

The settlement of New Amsterdam

New York was founded by the Dutch on Manhattan Island in 1614. 11 years later, the settlement of New Amsterdam was established. In 1664 it was captured by the English, who gave it a new name: New York. 2)

The capital city

From 1785 to 1790, New York served as the capital of the United States. In 1790, it surpassed Philadelphia to become the largest American city. 3)

Linguistically diverse city

It is the most linguistically diverse city in the world, as over 800 languages are spoken within its borders. In 2015 over 49% of New Yorkers spoke a language other than English at home. 4)

Nissan NV200

In early 2014, Nissan cars hit the streets of the city, having won a $1 billion contract. The model that replaced New York's 13,000 Ford Crown Victoria cabs is the Nissan NV200, of course also in the distinctive yellow color. 5)
