Kangaroos

Different sizes

The Red kangaroo can weigh 90 kg and grow to two meters in height. Black kangaroos, weighing about 20 kg, are the smallest species of the group. 1)

Protected by law

Kangaroos are protected by federal legislation in Australia, and their meat usually only comes from specially licensed hunters as part of a population control program. 2)

Decent swimmers

Kangaroos are not only great jumpers, but they can also swim. When moving on land they use their two hind legs and tail at the same time, but when swimming in the water they use each leg separately. 3)

Mother of three

A kangaroo may be the mother of up to three kangaroos at the same time: The oldest is outside the pouch and the younger lives in the pouch while the embryo awaits birth. 4)

Buck, boomer or jack

The adult male is called a buck, boomer or jack and the female is called a doe, flyer or jill. Baby kangaroos are called joeys. A group of kangaroos is called a mob. 5)
