The name Beijing first appeared in 1403 during the Ming Dynasty, and it means The North Capital. It consists of two Chinese signs: Bei 北 (north), and Jing 京 (capital). ²⁾.

Before being called The North Capital, Beijing changed its name 15 times! It was e.g. called Jicheng what means the City of Ji, Dadu what means Great Capital, or Beiping what means Central Peace.³⁾.
