Black apples exist! They are, in fact, very dark purple, but they are named Black Diamond. It is an extremely rare variety of apples from the Hua Niu family (Chinese Red Delicious). Black Diamonds grow in Tibet in the small mountain village of Nyingchi. The reason for their original color is a difference in temperature between day and night. ¹⁾.

There are about 7500 varieties of apples grown around the world, and 2500 varieties in the United States. Out of that huge number of grown apples only one variety is native to North America. It is a crabapple.²⁾.
