Brain

Most complex organ

The brain is the most complex organ in the body, made up of more than 100 billion nerve cells (neurons) and trillions of supportive cells (glia). 1)

Responsible for all of the body's functions

The brain is responsible for all of the body's functions, including movement, sensation, thought, and memory. 2)

Three main parts

The brain is divided into three main parts: the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem. 3)

Cerebrum

The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and is responsible for conscious thought, memory, and emotion. 4)

Cerebellum

The cerebellum is located beneath the cerebrum and is responsible for coordinating movement and balance. 5)

Brainstem

The brainstem connects the brain to the spinal cord and controls essential functions such as breathing, heartbeat, and blood pressure. 6)

Meninges

The brain is protected by the skull, which surrounds it, and three meninges, which are layers of protective tissue that cover the brain and spinal cord. 7)

60% fat

The brain is made up of about 60% fat, which helps to insulate the neurons and support their function. 8)

Energy-intensive organ

The brain is the most energy-intensive organ in the body, using about 20% of the body's total energy. 9)

Neuroplasticity

The brain is able to rewire and adapt itself, a process called neuroplasticity. 10)

Hippocampus

The brain contains a specialized region called the hippocampus, which is essential for forming new memories. 11)

Prefrontal cortex

The brain's prefrontal cortex, located at the front of the brain, is responsible for decision-making, problem-solving, and controlling impulses. 12)

Amygdala

The brain's amygdala, located deep within the temporal lobes, is responsible for processing emotions such as fear and aggression. 13)

Hypothalamus

The brain's hypothalamus controls the body's homeostasis and regulates many of the body's automatic functions, including body temperature, hunger, thirst, and fatigue. 14)

Occipital lobes

The brain's occipital lobes located at the back of the brain are responsible for processing visual information from the eyes. 15)
